anyone looking for housing?

There's a house with two separate 3 bedroom flats in Berkeley, both of which are up for rent.

I was thinking it'd be fabulous if some kind of shared housing that was kid-friendly and had other single parents in it could be set up there... It's got two yards and is in a decent neighborhood.

And even if that house didn't get secured, maybe we could still keep looking as a group?

Anyone interested?

The Drugging Of Our Children

OVERVIEW

Genre: Feature Documentary
Language: English
Country of Origin: USA
Running Time: 102 minutes

CAST & CREW

Director: Gary Null
Co-Directed by: Producer: Manette Loudon, David Chmura
Associate Producer & Legal Affairs: David Slater
Editor: David Chmura
Cinematographer: Derek Ramsey, David Chmura
Writer: Gary Null
Producer's Representative: Ostrow and Company

SYNOPSIS

How are large drug companies benefiting from the latest trend of selling powerful psychoactive drugs to America's children? Do these drugs really help our children cure symptoms of supposed mental illness, or do they tend to increase depression, violence, and suicide? Are we really treating the root causes of mental illness, or are we just eliminating annoying symptoms?

This feature-length documentary examines the alarming growth in the prescription of powerful psychotropic drugs for adolescents and children. Leading experts, as well as Neil Bush, Michael Moore and Gary Null, provide insightful commentary about the growing trend to pathologize the behavior of children, and then require them to take mind-altering pharmaceutical drugs as a "cure." The documentary recounts the national tragedy of Columbine and focuses on the largely unknown fact that teenage shooter Eric Harris was on the psychotropic drug Luvox at the time he and Dylan Klebold took the lives of 13 other students at their high school. Violence and aggression, precipitated by prescribed drug use, is also explored in an unprecedented discussion between Mark Taylor, the first shooting victim in the Columbine tragedy, and Cory Baadsgard, a teenager on Paxil and Effexor who, in another violent incident, took his teacher and 23 students hostage at gunpoint in his Washington high school. The film proceeds to show the dangerous links between psychotropic drugs like Paxil, Luvox, Effexor and Prozac – commonly prescribed to adolescents for anxiety, depression and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) - and the increased incidents of violence, suicide and psychotic behavior often observed in those children and adolescents who are taking the drugs. The film also provides compelling personal accounts, including a mother going to prison and losing her son to government authorities because she refused to give her son psychiatric drugs. Leading medical authorities and mental health professionals speak the unvarnished truth about current increased diagnoses of recently devised mental illnesses and the unprecedented prescription of a host of very powerful psychoactive drugs to "treat" them. Finally, this documentary explores safer, alternative methods for treating childhood mental illness.

Something came up that has filled my next five Saturdays. The lady I usually use has training on Saturdays through April and Bananas (childcare referrals) doesn't have anyone in my area who does Saturdays. I suppose I could try craigslist again, but I wasn't terribly impressed when I tried that route last summer. Any suggestions? Know any Oakland or Berkeley rec centers with Saturday programs? My daughter is a 2nd grader this year.

My ex husband is fighting me on the custody of my daughter after 4 years of seperation and divorce. He has been pretty stable for the last 6 months now and has decided behind my back to enroll my daughter is school near his home (which is in Oregon) while she was on visitation with him. He claims that he can handle it, and is telling me that its not fair to her and him that he lives for far away. At 4:00 we are going to be discussing if she stays or comes home (which of course I would prefer). She's a mess over it and I just don't know why he is pulling this at the last minute, when she was suppose to come home by the end of this week.
I have contacted an attorney to handle the matter but I was wondering if anyone else out there has some referrals or advice to help me through this.

http://tribes.tribe.net/kidsday

A while back Melissa & I made some half-assed attempts to get some meeting of the parents at some fun place for the kids to chum around, but we're all too f&^*^*&% busy, so I just converted "Tribe Heckler Tribe" to the closely related "Kid's Day - Night" tribe so maybe we'll start posting all the places that have kid's days or nights or specials for kids or reading times or musicians for kids or whatever - then we don't have to plan something but maybe will find a bunch of places that are fun for our kids (& us) and maybe even easy on the wallets - then you tell two friends, who tell two friends, and so on, and so on, and so on (was that a Breck commercial? is that stuff still on the market? if not, hope this works better than that).

For ease, I'm going to cut and paste this same thing on the other parent's tribes I'm on so if you already read it, then there's nothing new here...just being lazy (efficient?)

Hi Everyone,

I'm a mom of a 3 yo boy and I'm starting to go through a separation with his father. This has been coming for some time but now that we are actually moving forward with the process, I'm finding it very hard and lonely and isolating. I also work full time so it has been hard to make connections with other parents for playdates, coffee, trips to the zoo, and just general hanging out and craziness. I would love to build a community of other moms and kids for my son and myself. We're in San Francisco, by the way.

Please drop a me a line and say 'hi'. And if any of you have been through what I'm starting to go through now, then I would love to hear about your experience, frustrations, etc.

Kisses,
Lisa

Single Moms group

When my daughter was an infant, I was very interested in joining a Moms group. I went to a few meetings and loved what I heard. The moms met for play dates, had a babysitting co-op, some kids in the same age groups had sleepovers, when a mom had a baby they brought her a dinner for a week. Problem for me was, all these moms were married. Every last one of them. They were very nice but being a mom by choice, I felt a little out of place.

Why on earth is there no group like this for single moms? Are we just too busy to network?

And, just to say it.....I am getting so sick of the term "single mom". What does that mean, exactly? I am interested in a group of MOMS without partners or extended family to help them out.

Thoughts? Advice? Feedback? Please leave your two cents here!

Thanks!

I'm not there yet, but I'm hoping to move out there over the summer (I've got job interviews in sf next week). Since I don't know the area well, housing has me a bit concerned. Any areas you would be for or against? My kids are 7 and 12...I know there'd be aftercare at school for my youngest, but my son would more than likely beat me home most afternoons.
I'm trying to manifest a perfect situation for me and my 3 month old daughter.
Her dad and I tried to do the co-parenting/live-in situation. It's not working. So I'm looking to move out. I can't imagine me living alone with Ariya and no support at home.
My ideal situation would be to hook up with some other conscious hip single mamas and have a house together so we could all create community and support for each other and our children. I want to stay near SF so my baby and her dad can have a good relationship. So Oakland..Berkeley?
This is SF. I'm sure this kind of situation is out there..or there are mamas who might be interested?
Let me know if you've heard of anything or if you yourself might be interested!

Thanks!
Nina

So, I am gonna pull my hair out or loose my mind. I have encouraged my daughter to use her brain and now I kinda regret it! She says NO! to me a lot, is in that stage where she wants to do everything by herself ESPECIALLY when we don't have time for her to do everything by herself and seems to space out when I remind her for the 10th time NOT to throw the ball in the house. She will then throw the ball in the house yet again. ARGH! These are just a few of the things happening lately. Shit, there's a ton of em! I found myself at Barnes & Noble today looking at the Sears Discipline book. Not sure what I need here. More patience? Time outs? Ignore it and it will go away? How much attention should I give to this behavior? She is obviously pushing boundaries and I don't know how far to let her go. I don't want to be the grumpy mama!
Thanks, ladies!

Okay so I struggle to make ends meet. Lots of people do and I certainly do not think I will ever have that extra million collecting dust in some bank account someday. BUT, my rent and bills and childcare costs are out of control. How can I make extra money (or just get a sweet full time job that actually pays me what I'm worth! with benefits!) so I can afford the finer things in life...like a new pair of jeans! Or a luxury pair of shoes!
And, please, do not send me emails with network marketing ideas or tupperware parties. Sorry, I have done all that and it is just not for me!

I am more interested in inspiring stories from the magical ladies of Tribe!

You can order petitions from this site to help get the law enacted. It will bring stiffer consequences to sex offenders.

I think the new law proposal is slightly too harsh, but I'd rather have laws that are too harsh on sex offenders than too soft. Which is what they are right now in my opinion- way too soft.

I thought I would do something extra fatherly and really celebrate being both a mother and a father to my kid. So we went kayaking and hiking and I carried him for half the hike, which made me feel pretty damn fatherly, and I really glowed for all the people having father's day picnics, made sure to really shine on this somewhat depressing day for those of us who really needed the lift. How did your day go?

So, curious....what are you single young mamas doing this New Years. Was resigned to staying in (New Years is usually overrated anyhow) but then got invited to a friends' party and am considering going with my son provided there might be other children there or it will be a decent environment for him while fun for me.

So, anyone else? What do you do on New Year's? Have a bash with your other parent friends? Pay outrageous money for a babysitter? Let your child sleep on the bed with the coats?

I haven't said anything since joining this tribe and wanted to say hello and wish everyone a happy holiday.

My little guy, Indigo age 7, and I are looking to meet/connect with other mamas and kids in SF. Between work, school and activities I sometime leave little time to meet new friends. anyone else feel this way sometimes?
